I tend to be one of the least observant people that I know. For the most part, this doesn’t cause too many problems for me. However, it has often made my friendships with women more difficult. I have only just started to realize that women rely on each other to notice the little things that the men in their life may not be likely to notice.

My friend Sarah is great at doing this. I use aromatherapy candles in my home because I love the healing power of these richly scented candles. I recently bought a new brand of scented jar candles that I had never used before. The scent (vanilla) was the same as what I often have burning in my home but it differed a little bit because it was a new brand. Sarah came over to have lunch at my place and she noticed the subtle difference immediately, asking me if I was using new candles.

This is something that I would never notice in someone else’s home. I probably wouldn’t notice the new carpet or the repainted awning either. I am also not the kind of woman who will think to compliment your new haircut and I would probably not notice a friend’s pregnancy until the third trimester if she didn’t mention it. Most of my friends tolerate this but I have definitely started to see that there are some limitations on certain female friendships because my powers of observation are lacking.
