My son has never been especially materialistic.  The past few years, he’s asked us not to bother getting him Christmas presents.  Last year, however, he said he wanted some cosmetic dentistry.  My wife and I weren’t sure how to react.  On the one hand, we didn’t want to send the message that he needs to conform to culture’s standards of beauty in order to be happy or complete.  On the other hand, his mouth is a little goofy looking. 

I know that high school kids can really be cruel when it comes to teasing about these sorts of things.  Eventually, we decided to go ahead and hire a San Jose dentist to give him some porcelain veneers.  I think we did the right thing.  He didn’t see it as a concession that people who judge him by his physical appearance were right.  He just wanted to look like other people so that when people met him they’d notice his great qualities, and not just the way his mouth looks. 

A lot of people don’t have the luxury of looking like everyone else or being able to change that, and these people should be treated with respect and dignity, because they aren’t less than anyone else.  But we wanted to give our son the ability not to worry about that.

Being a stay at home mom in charge of this year’s girls’ trip, I was charged with finding something “chicky”, some place we can go that our husbands wouldn’t be caught dead going to (or so they claim; we all know they’d love it too).  New England is the perfect place to steal away for a romantic vacation. And best of all, this area has tons of welcoming New England inns to chose from. I even came up with a couple of ideas to help me have the romantic New England getaway of your dreams when I finally lasso my husband into going!

If we stay at one of the many attractive and secluded Rhode Island inns, I’ll ask if they have a “romance package.” Many inns offer unique package deals that may include champagne, rose, chocolates and/or other romantic amenities for a special price.

And I won’t be afraid to splurge a little. If this is an anniversary or another very special occasion, I’m going to spring for the fireplace room, the whirlpool tub or the king-size bed. My sweetie will thank me!

Then again, we could stay at a Connecticut bed and breakfast. Well, if that’s the case, we’ll research the area. Find out where some of the romantic hot spot are located. Find some safe and relaxing trails we can walk hand and had through. Or, plan to have a quiet picnic in a pretty, wooded area near your B&B.

From what the girls tell me, the key is to take advantage of your innkeeper’s knowledge. Innkeepers are there to make your vacation as pleasurable as possible, so it’s a good idea to ask them about the restaurants in the area. And I’m never afraid make any special requests!  So while I’ll be enjoying our girls’ trip, I’m really going to be scoping out the scene for when hubby and I travel next.

It is amazing to me sometimes how much people with disabilities are capable of. I remember as a child being fascinated with how well a friend with only one hand tied her shoes. I think those of us without any disabilities are so accustomed to our little conveniences that we can’t begin to imagine how anyone could accomplish the same things without them.

That’s why I like hearing about instances such as this doctor, who is disabled. Even without the use of his right arm, he has continued to pursue a career as a doctor.
